Artist's Comments

The masthead of the Viking ship Oseberg, unearthed in a Viking burial site in Norway and now at the Vikingships museum in Oslo.

You really can't fault the Vikings on aesthetic design. I just love the shape of these ships, with all the curves, carvings and twirly bits, all so incredibly well put together with wooden pegs. Beautiful. I always like sketching in public; it's so fun to people-watch out of the corner of my eye, catching all those who're surruptitiously trying to glance over my shoulder, pretending to be uninterested. Then there're the sweet old ladies who always come up and say something nice, even if what I'm drawing is terrible or hardly started, dragging their bored and myopic husbands over for a look. 'Look at this Bernard - what this young lady's doing!' :giggle:

I get that reaction, too. I used to go set up at the Outdoor Farmer's Markets on Saturday's and sketch, or take pictures. I'd always get old women asking me what "exactly it is" I was doing, or old men saying how good they were at similar things when they were my age.

Believe me, you express yourself perfectly :)
I just feel bad that us Brits don't put so much effort into learning other languages - makes me feel so bad when visiting other countries that I can't even try...

And thank you so much for another wonderful compliment and :+fav:

Speaking of which, you're in Italy, right?
Recommend any good (small) places to visit? I'm thinking of going this summer - mostly around Tuscany, but I'd like to travel around quite a bit by train. :)
